Regiment: 1st Michigan Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Douglas Oct. 16, 1863 Friend Gustus I got your letter this morning and was glad to hear from you. I am well and tuff, hav’t bin sick any since I have bin in the service and wish that I was there a week or two now to get sum apples and such things for thar arn’t many out here. and they ask as much again as they are worth, for five cents you can’t get but three small ones and not very good at that. We tell them that they ask to much for them, they say that those hav’t so many seeds as those is, it is pretty tuff to be where you can’t get such things first when you please, but a fellow will get used to it so that it don’t come quite so hard on a fellow. I wish that you could come out here and see all of these rebels here. you would see the greatest sight that you ever did in your life, for men they are dusty and lousey as they can be. Go around to the bason and the dust is as thick as it can be. They don’t clean out bason once a week. Tell Mary that I wish that there was somebody here that I could exchange with and let them wright my letters for me. I had sutlers do anything else than sit down and wright a letter, but I am getting so that I don’t have so much as I did have to wright so much, but it won’t do me any hurt to wright. We may be here all winter and we may be down south before two weeks. We don’t know for certain yet, but I think that we will go south for there is invenlet POWs coming here all the time. There was four companys here this good while and two more companys came this morning and six more expect every day. If we stay here we won’t have much to do for there will be so many soldiers here. It was my birthday yesterday. I was nineteen years old. You better believe that I had to take a great licking. All of the boys in our company whip me as fast as one would get down they would step up and pitch on to me, whip me and that is the way that they kept moving until all of the boys had whiped me. I should like to have been there on Fred’s birthday and see you whipping him around. Tell Mary that she wrote a pretty good letter. I like to read letters from home and to do that I must wright. I must hurry for it is pretty near time for me to go on guard again. We have to go on guard every other day, but we are good for it. Nothing more for this that I can think of, wright as soon as you get this. Good by from Charles R. Bonfoey to Augusto Teed Directions to Charles R. Bonfoey Co. D  First Regiment Mich. S.S. Camp Douglas Chicago ILL You wanted to know where I got that kind of money. You can buy all that you want for one cent on a dollar. It is good down south.
