Regiment: 6th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: On Steamer Empress Sept 11 /64 Mrs Babcock Dear Madam it is no pleasant task for me to address you [ ? ] the subject I have to- I come on board this boat at Vicksburg & found your husband Samuel P. Babcock very sick he was on his way home to Michigan. I took him under my special care & he failed very fast & Died on Saturday at 12 00 M. he wished me to tell you he died happy he said he felt he had done his duty & was sure of a home in heaven he was perfectly concious to the last. his things I will express to you he was left at Memphis to be buried – – if you should wish to write me again address me at Litchfield Ill I sent a lock of his hair to his Dayhter by his request Respect yours in [ ? ] Mrs. M.
