Camp near Hartwood Church Aug. 14th, 1863 Dear Uncle: Not having held any correspondence with you since I have been in the army, it is with some reluctance that I write now, for I know that, through different sources, you hear enough and more perhaps, of this war than you care about already: but thinking that a letter from me giving a short account for the part “we wolverines” have taken in the late campaign, might be of some interest to you. I concluded to write to you.

Chantilly Fairfax Co. Virginia June 16/63 Mr & Mrs Snook For the first time since we commenced active campaigning, I am left in camp, the company being out about three miles on picket to be gone two days, a few men and horses with what pertains to camp are left in my command. It suits me much better to be out and moving, especially when we are working and chaceing up the Rebs.

West Point, Va. 20 miles from Richmond Saturday, May 10th/1862 Dear Sister Not having finished my 8th letter on account of orders that we much march right off. We left Camp Winfield Scott, and went to Yorktown (the city that was evacuated by one hundred thousand Rebels, including President Davis, Gen. Lee, Gen. Johnston, and other prominent men). The day before, they left in great haste, leaving over 300 of their dead unburied and 1,000 of their wounded without any food or medicine.
