About the Author
Wallace M. Spear was residing in La Crosse, Wisconsin when he enlisted as a Private in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Company B on April 18, 1861. He was mustered into service that same day and was later promoted to Sergeant. On September 21, Spear was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant. He was discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant of the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery on January 1, 1862 and was later promoted to Senior 2nd Lieutenant. His other promotions included: Junior 1st Lieutenant, December 17; Senior 1st Lieutenant, February 12, 1863; and, Captain, November 11. Wallace M.
