About the Author
William A. Smith (b. 1839) enlisted in the 17th Michigan Infantry on August 4, 1862 at Adrian, Michigan. He was mustered into Company A as a 22-year old Private on August 19. Smith was listed as being wounded in December of 1863 at an undisclosed location. He was promoted to Sergeant on February 23, 1865 and then to Sergeant Major on May 12. William A. Smith was discharged from service on June 3 at Delaney House in Washington, D.C. He died in 1923 and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fairhaven, Vermont.Documents for this Author:
