Thomas Smith, of St. Joseph County, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 11th Michigan Infantry Company G on August 20, 1861 at Colon, Michigan. He was mustered into service as a Private on September 4 at the age of 27. On February 1, 1862, Smith was promoted to Sergeant.
