Private James H. Smith, of Mount Vernon, Wisconsin, enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Company H on April 24, 1861. He was mustered into service that same day and was later promoted to Sergeant. Smith was transferred from Company H to Company A on June 10, 1864. On November 30, he was transferred to the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Company G. He was promoted to Sergeant Major on January 1, 1865 and transferred from Company G to Field and Staff that same day. James H. Smith was discharged on July 14.Documents for this Author:
