About the Author
John Scroggs Poland, of Indiana, enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd United States Army Infantry on May 6, 1861. He graduated from the United States Military Academy and was mustered into service that same day. Poland received several promotions including: 1st Lieutenant, June 6, 1861; Quartermaster, August 10, 1861; Captain, June 27, 1862; Major by Brevet, December 13, 1862; and, Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, May 3, 1863. John S. Poland had subsequent service in the US Army until his death on August 8, 1898.Documents for this Author:
