About the Author

John M. Oliver, of Monroe County, Michigan, enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Infantry Company A on June 20, 1861 at Adrian, Michigan. He was mustered into service that same day at the age of 33. On September 25, Oliver was transferred from Company A to Company F. He was promoted several times while serving with the 4th Michigan Infantry, including: 1st Lieutenant, May 16; Captain, September 25; and, Colonel, January 15, 1862. He resigned from service on March 15, however, he was commissioned into the 15th Michigan Infantry Field and Staff on March 13. On January 12, 1865, Oliver was promoted to Brigadier General and commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers General Staff. His last promotion was to Major General by Brevet on March 13. John M. Oliver was discharged on August 25.
