About the Author

Perrin V. Fox of Grand Rapids, Michigan, enlisted in the 1st Michigan Engineers Company D as a Private on September 12, 1861. He was mustered into service on October 29 at the age of 39. On December 15, 1863, he was promoted to Major. Fox was in command of a detachment at Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Brown’s Ferry, Tennessee from September 17 to November 30. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on April 17, 1864 and was transferred from the 1st Michigan Engineers into the 1st Veteran Volunteer Engineers on July 2. On March 13, 1865, Fox was promoted to Colonel by Brevet for faithful and efficient services in war. Perrin V. Fox was discharged from service on September 26 at Nashville, Tennessee and returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he lived after the war.
