Fairchild, Lucius

About the Author

Lucius Fairchild was born on December 27, 1831 in Portage County, Ohio. Fairchild was living in Madison, Wisconsin when he enlisted as a Captain in the 1st Wisconsin Infantry Field and Staff. He was mustered into service on April 20, 1861 at the age of 29. On August 5, he was discharged for promotion into the 16th U.S. Army Infantry and on August 9, he was discharged for promotion as a Major in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry. His other promotion while serving in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry was to Lieutenant Colonel on August 20. He was wounded and taken prisoner on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He received a severe wound in his left arm that led to it being amputated. On October 20, he was discharged for promotion to Brigadier General in the U.S. Volunteers General Staff. He resigned from service on November 2. Fairchild was Governor of Wisconsin from 1866 to 1872. Lucius Fairchild died on May 23, 1896 in Madison, Wisconsin.
