About the Author

Gardner B. Clark, of Kent County, Michigan, enlisted at the age of 26 as a Private in the 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Company C on August 21, 1861 at Detroit, Michigan. He was mustered into service on August 26 and later was promoted to Corporal, then Sergeant. He was also promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on February 25, 1863 and 1st Lieutenant on May 3. Clark was wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 2 and then again on May 6, 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia. On September 9, he was discharged for disability, but returned on February 10, 1865 as an Adjutant in the 6th Company of Michigan Hancock’s Army. Gardner B. Clark was discharged from service on July 26, 1866 and he lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan after the war.
