James C. Brown, of Van Buren County, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 1st Michigan Engineers Company G on October 10, 1861 at Waverly, Michigan. He was mustered into service at the age of 23 on October 29. Brown received a promotion to Artificer on an undisclosed day. James C.
